The eastern tip of France is covered by a low, green rounded massif of mountains
called the Vosges. Popular for hiking, cycling and of course motorbikes it is an
area of spectacular natural beauty, filled with pine and silver birch forests, waterfalls
and streams and high rounded peaks.
Following an early morning Euro Tunnel crossing we make a quick transit through Northern
France reaching Reims, the capital of the Champagne region by lunchtime.
Continuing on directly through the vineyards we will pass some of the big name Champagne
producers of the region such as Bollinger and Laurent-Perrier. Tonight’s luxury three
star hotel is located close to the town of Troyes in the heart of the regional natural
reserve of the Forêt d'Orient and the Champagne-Ardennes lakes.
Day two and using the quiet back roads, we see the terrain becoming more mountainous
and forested as we head into the Vosges Mountains.
Our hotel for the next two nights is located directly on the lake at Gerardmer and
is perfectly placed for our ride into the mountains. The next day sees us ride the
fantastic Route des Crêtes, a spectacular road which follows the main ridge of the
Vosges including the highest peak of the range, the Grand Ballon.
The Route des Crêtes was originally constructed as a supply route for the First World
War and its strategic location meant that several important battles were fought among
these staggering peaks. With abundant twists and turns and long open sweepers the
Route des Crêtes is a must for any biker and today’s ride-out will ensure you take
in the absolute best that this area of France has to offer.
The next morning we head north along the Route D Epinal and visit the Ossuaire De
Douaumont. This monument was built in remembrance of the 130,000 unknown soldiers
whose remains lay at rest below this building.
Leaving the battlefields we continue north and arrive at our overnight stay in an
idyllic country town located in the Ardennes region of Belgium. The hotel boasts
a fantastic restaurant and bar which overlooks the River Semois.
Day five and with all the twisty roads behind us we ride the rural roads of Northern
France and return to Calais for our mid afternoon ferry crossing to Dover.
Daily Mileage: 180 – 260 mile
